Facial asymmetry is frequently observed in partially edentulous patients after the placement of dental implants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of dental implants on the canine facial skeleton. Nine beagle dogs were used for this study. Under general anesthesia, the mandibles of all dogs were splitted in three parts, and the lower alveolar ridges were removed. To facilitate the implant placement, the third molars were extracted. Three different sizes of dental implants (3.75, 5.25, and 8 mm) were placed in the residual interforaminal spaces. X-rays were taken at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. The radiographs were used to construct three-dimensional models, and measurements were made with the model. A significant reduction of the anterior-posterior dimension of the alveolar ridges was observed, and the same pattern was observed for the maxillary and mandibular alveolar ridges. With the same size of implant, an increasing number of dental implants were associated with an increased reduction in the width of the residual interforaminal space. The canine alveolar ridges and the ramus showed a significant reduction in the vertical height. With the different implants (3.75, 5.25, and 8 mm), the difference in the vertical height between the right and left sides was statistically significant.
